Teachers must be intentional when planning their instruction to ensure that all students needs are met and that their classroom is running smoothly and effectively. Without these factors, the chances for student success are minimal. Teachers must incorporate types of learning that will reach as many students as possible, which requires some creativity. Doing this will keep students engaged and interested in what is occurring in the classroom. There should also be an organized and structured plan of events for each day. Consistency makes the classroom feel more comfortable and less stressful since students know what to expect and what is expected of them. One example of this at a secondary level would be to have students begin every class period by doing breathing exercises, warm ups, and scales. Then they would move into either sight reading a new piece or working on one they would already know. They then would end by warming down and taking note of what they believe they need to work on before the next rehearsal. While the structure is the same, the lessons and what they gain from each rehearsal will be different.
When planning lessons during my student teaching, the main thing I kept in mind was the individual needs of my students. Students need structure and consistency in order to be comfortable but if I got too stuck in routine, I would lose their attention. That's where my knowledge of different pedagogies come into play. I tried to structure the beginning and end procedures of my classroom to be the same everyday so the students knew what was expected of them when they came and left but the middle was different everyday. This allowed the students to get situated quickly so that we could begin the lesson. This was extremely beneficial with my elementary students as time with them was very limited. By having a different approach to the middle part of my lesson everyday, the students were excited to see what they were going to learn. This also increased my chances of reaching every student that I was teaching as the way they learn may be different than the person sitting next to them. I was intentional about the structure and pedagogies I used in my lessons so that I could keep the students comfortable and engaged.

Unit Plan
This is a 3rd/4th grade unit that I wrote and taught during my elementary placement at St. George Elementary. It is over rhythm performance utilizing the "1 e & a" counting system.
