Professional development is central to the continued excellence of any educator. Professional learning includes a wide variety of topics, pedagogies, strategies, and colleagues' wisdom I can take back in my classroom.
I've had multiple great opportunities to participate and engage in professional development. I have attended KMEA in 2016, 2017, and 2018 as well as performed at the conference in 2017 with the K-State brass ensemble. During the summer of 2018, I attended the Conn Selmer Institute in Mishawaka, Indiana and spent time learning from some of the top music educators across America. As for my performance abilities' development, I attended the International Trumpet Guild regional conference in early spring of 2018, as well as competed in the small ensemble division at the National Trumpet Competition in Denton, TX during March of 2018. Attending masterclasses and hearing world-class performances were just a few of the experiences I was able to get while at these two conferences. Overall, I truly believe that I have had a wide array of professional development opportunities that I have take advantage of, and the combination of my educational learning as well as my applied trumpet learning will combine to give me strengths in teaching for my future classroom.
One of the major benefits of student teaching is getting to work closely with someone who knows more about teaching than I do. Both of my cooperating teachers were willing to walk me through their process for lesson planning, implementation, assessments, as well as the other tasks that go along with being a teacher. This was very beneficial to me as I hadn't gotten to see how this looks long term. They were also able to give me feedback on my lessons which allowed me to continue learning and growing as a teacher. Beyond just my cooperating teachers, I got to experience a few professional development days in the district. By attending, I learned more about kagan strategies and the champs strategy for expectations. These were two things that I had discussed previously in my classes but learning about them while actually being in a school district gave me a chance to implement them as well. I have already grown significantly as a teacher by only spending one semester in a school, I look forward to the other opportunities that will be presented to me as I continue my career in teaching.
